Reddit just changed the math on app advertising. On May 20, Reddit announced three new tools for app advertisers: Max Campaigns moving to open beta, App Event Optimization going to general availability, and Reddit Dual Attribution starting beta tests. The headline product for performance marketers is Reddit Dual Attribution, which puts first-party Reddit reporting next to MMP and SKAN last-touch numbers in the same Ads Manager view.

If you spend on Reddit, this is the most important measurement update the platform has shipped. Here is what changed, what the numbers actually show, and the operator plan to test Reddit Dual Attribution without breaking your current reporting.

What Reddit Dual Attribution Actually Does

Reddit Dual Attribution is Reddit’s first-party attribution and measurement layer for app advertisers. It sits inside Reddit Ads Manager and reports performance two ways at once. You see the third-party MMP and SKAN last-touch view you already trust. You also see Reddit’s first-party view of which campaigns and ads influenced the install or in-app event.

Reddit calls this an industry-first side-by-side approach, per the official Reddit announcement. The product is in beta. You have to talk to your Reddit rep to enable it.

Why does this matter. Last-touch attribution does not capture how Reddit actually contributes to app installs. People on Reddit research, compare, and validate decisions over multiple sessions before they ever tap install. The last-touch model usually credits the platform that served the final click. That is rarely Reddit. Reddit Dual Attribution surfaces the upper-funnel value the last-touch model misses.

You still keep your MMP. You still see your SKAN data. You just get an additional column that tells a different story. The two views together are the point.

Key Takeaway: Reddit Dual Attribution is not a replacement for your MMP. It is a parallel lens that exposes the credit Reddit gets cut out of by last-touch models.

The Three Reddit App Performance Updates In Plain English

Reddit Dual Attribution is one of three updates that shipped on May 20. The other two are just as important for any team buying app installs on Reddit.

Max Campaigns for App Ads, now in beta. Max is Reddit’s automated campaign type. It optimizes every impression across targeting, bidding, and creative rotation. In 16 split tests run between January and April 2026, Max delivered a 15 percent average reduction in CPA and a 28 percent increase in results volume. DocMorris ran Max on iOS and saw a 20 percent lower cost per install and a 73 percent lower purchase CPA. Those numbers come directly from Reddit’s announcement, not from a partner blog.

App Event Optimization, now in general availability. AEO uses machine learning to optimize toward in-app events, not just installs. Think trial starts, sign-ups, and purchases. Reddit reports a 22 percent average CPA improvement across the beta. AllTrails used it for trial sign-ups and saw a 28 percent lower Start Trial CPA and a 39 percent increase in Start Trial conversions, per MediaPost reporting.

Reddit Dual Attribution, now in beta. First-party reporting alongside MMP and SKAN inside Ads Manager. The three updates work together. Max gives Reddit more automation room. AEO gives Reddit the optimization signal. Reddit Dual Attribution gives you the measurement to see what is happening.

Why Reddit Dual Attribution Lands Now

Two things have shifted at the same time. App install volume on Reddit is up 129 percent year over year, comparing Q1 2025 to Q1 2026. Advertisers are pouring real budget into the platform. At the same time, attribution itself is breaking across the entire stack.

AI search changed the click economics first. We covered that shift in how AI Mode killed last-click attribution. GA4 added a separate AI Assistant channel to keep AI-driven traffic out of the default reporting buckets. We broke that down in the GA4 AI Assistant channel update. Reddit Dual Attribution is the social platform version of the same admission. The default model under-counts platforms that drive discovery and consideration, not the last click.

App attribution had this problem earlier than web. SKAN gave Apple a privacy-safe but blunt measurement layer. MMPs did their best to stitch the rest together. Reddit Dual Attribution adds the platform’s own view as a third reference point, not a replacement.

The Six-Step Operator Plan For Reddit Dual Attribution

If you run app campaigns on Reddit, here is the playbook for the next 30 days. Treat Reddit Dual Attribution as a measurement experiment, not a budget reallocation trigger.

  1. Talk to your Reddit rep this week. Reddit Dual Attribution and Max for App Ads are both gated by your rep. AEO is GA so you can flip it on directly.
  2. Lock down your conversion events. AEO needs clean in-app event signals to work. If your event setup is messy, fix that before you turn anything on. We covered the standard pattern in server-side conversion tracking, which applies to app events as well.
  3. Baseline your current Reddit performance. Pull last 28 days of MMP and SKAN reporting for your Reddit campaigns. Note CPI, in-app event CPA, retention, and LTV. That is what Reddit Dual Attribution will be measured against.
  4. Turn on Reddit Dual Attribution in reporting only. Do not change your bids. Do not move budget. Just watch the side-by-side numbers for two weeks.
  5. Run AEO on one or two high-confidence in-app events. Start with a single event that has at least 50 weekly conversions. Trial start or first purchase work well. Compare to your business-as-usual install campaigns.
  6. Test Max for App Ads on a small slice of budget. Pick 10 to 15 percent of your Reddit spend. Mirror your best business-as-usual campaign with a Max version. Run both for two weeks before drawing any conclusions.

The point is to gather clean data, not to chase the 22 percent or 15 percent headline numbers. Those are averages from Reddit’s beta. Your account will land somewhere in the distribution, not at the mean.

What Reddit Dual Attribution Will Not Fix

Reddit Dual Attribution is a measurement product. It does not magically improve performance. It does not change how SKAN works. It does not give you cross-platform deduplication.

Here is what it will not do. It will not tell you whether Reddit deserves credit your MMP gave to Meta or Google. The two views report side by side. You still have to interpret them. It will not solve cross-platform attribution. You still need an MMP or your own incrementality testing for that. It will not make a bad creative work. Max can rotate assets, but if your hook is wrong, the rotation only spreads the loss.

The same logic we wrote about for the Google Ads Data Manager API migration applies here. New measurement and identity infrastructure does not replace your fundamentals. It just gives you a sharper view of how the fundamentals are performing.

Key Takeaway: Reddit Dual Attribution is a lens. Your media plan, creative, and conversion setup are still the engine. Treat the rollout as a reporting upgrade, not a strategy change.

Where Reddit Dual Attribution Fits In Your 2026 Measurement Stack

The modern measurement stack for app advertisers now has four layers. Each one tells you something the others cannot.

  • MMP (AppsFlyer, Adjust, Singular, Branch). Your cross-channel last-touch and assisted view.
  • SKAN. Apple’s privacy-safe iOS post-back layer.
  • Platform first-party (Reddit Dual Attribution, similar Meta and Google views). Each platform’s own answer to what it contributed.
  • Incrementality testing. Holdout cells, geo tests, and conversion lift studies that measure real causal impact.

No single layer is enough. The platforms each have a self-interest in over-claiming. MMPs and SKAN under-credit the upper funnel. Incrementality is the gold standard, but it is expensive and slow. The operator job is to read all four and triangulate.

Reddit Dual Attribution adds the platform layer for one channel many app marketers were under-measuring. If you also run Meta or Google app campaigns, you already have their first-party views. The Reddit addition closes a gap. Meta’s automation shift is moving fast in parallel, which we covered in the Meta AI ads restructuring update. Google’s smart bidding signal mix keeps evolving too, and the enhanced conversions troubleshooting guide covers the foundation.

The Reddit Dual Attribution Question Every Operator Should Ask

If Reddit Dual Attribution shows your Reddit campaigns are driving 2x or 3x the value your MMP credits to the channel, what do you do.

The wrong move is to immediately reallocate budget based on Reddit’s first-party numbers. Reddit has a clear interest in the higher number being true. The right move is to design an incrementality test. Run a geo holdout. Pause Reddit in five matched states for four weeks while you keep it on in five comparable states. Measure the delta in total installs and in-app events, not just attributed performance.

That is the only way to know whether Reddit Dual Attribution is exposing real undercounted value or just claiming credit it does not deserve. The platform telling you it earned more credit is not the same as a controlled test confirming it did.

The same discipline applies to every platform first-party number you will see this year. Treat Reddit Dual Attribution as a hypothesis generator, not a conclusion. The hypothesis is interesting. Test it.
