New data settles a question paid teams have been asking all summer. Google AI Mode ads now show up on 29.45 percent of commercial searches, close to one in every three queries where a shopper is ready to act. That is not a rumor from a Reddit thread or a single screenshot. It is a study of 50,032 commercial keywords, collected on June 30, 2026, across 20 niches, all specifically chosen because they trigger a text ad in AI Mode.

If you sell services, run a lead generation site, or manage a paid media budget for a client, this is the moment to change how you plan for the second half of the year. Google AI Mode ads are no longer an experiment you can ignore until January. They are a live channel with rules that reward some bidders and punish others, and the pattern is very different from classic search.

Here is what the numbers say, what they mean for your account, and where to put your next hour of work.

What the New Google AI Mode Ads Study Actually Measured

The SE Ranking research team pulled 50,032 US commercial keywords across 20 niches, roughly 2,500 per niche. Every keyword was selected because it triggers a website text ad, not a product carousel. Data was collected on June 30, 2026 (SE Ranking, July 14, 2026).

Of that keyword set, 14,733 returned a text ad in AI Mode, which is where the 29.45 percent headline comes from. When ads did appear, 71.1 percent of the time they showed up in pairs, and only 28.9 percent of the time a single ad ran alone. So the default is a shared block, not a solo placement.

Two more numbers matter. Only 11.53 percent of advertiser domains showed up among the cited sources that AI Mode used to build its answer. At the exact URL level that number drops to 1.95 percent. Paying for the ad slot does not buy you a spot in the citation stack.

These numbers apply to a specific moment in a fast-moving system. Google is still shipping new AI Mode ad formats, and your live account may look different from the aggregate. Treat the study as a floor, not a ceiling.

Where Google AI Mode Ads Show Up and Where They Hide

The niche gap is enormous. Pets keywords returned an ad on 72.38 percent of queries. Healthcare returned an ad on only 2.64 percent. That is roughly a 70 point spread inside the same feature.

CPC is the single strongest predictor of whether an ad slot appears at all. In the low CPC bucket, under two dollars, ads showed up on 24.33 percent of queries. In the mid CPC bucket, two to ten dollars, that rose to 32.45 percent. In the high CPC bucket, ten dollars and up, ads showed up on 53.56 percent of queries. Search volume and keyword difficulty had no direct correlation with ad frequency.

The competitive pattern is also uneven. In pets and entertainment, a small group of advertisers wins the same slots over and over, averaging more than 50 ad appearances per advertiser. In healthcare and news, the field is wider and shallower, with averages closer to 2.5 appearances per advertiser. If you sell into a concentrated niche, you are lining up against repeat winners with mature creative and mature bids. If you sell into a fragmented one, the slot is more open than you think.

Two takeaways for planning. First, do not assume your vertical is on the same ad frequency curve as the industry average. Pull your own keyword list and check. Second, use the CPC bracket of your top 20 money keywords as a fast proxy for how often you will show up in AI Mode at all.

Why Google AI Mode Ads Do Not Buy You a Citation

This is the finding that changes creative strategy. Only 11.53 percent of ad domains appeared among cited sources on the same query. Only 1.95 percent of ad URLs showed up as exact citations. About 85 percent of the time, the advertiser did not rank organically for the query at all.

In plain terms, buying the ad slot is not a shortcut into the AI answer. The generator that writes the AI Mode response is pulling from a separate stack, and it does not look at your bid. If you want to be cited, you need the same signals that earn organic AI citations. Our top six AI search ranking signals for 2026 post covers the operator-level moves that actually move that needle.

The practical split is this. Ads in AI Mode get you a click near the answer. Citations get you a mention inside the answer. Those are two different budgets, two different KPIs, and two different content plans. Combining them in one campaign brief is how teams end up spending on ads and starving the content work that would actually earn the citation.

For teams already running paid media alongside a GEO effort, you can find your citation gaps with the four-pass workflow in our GEO content audit and feed the fixes back into the same page set your ads are pointing at.

How to Bid for Google AI Mode Ads Without Wrecking Your Account

The current placement uses broad match or keywordless targeting. That is by design. Google is deciding which of your assets to show against a rephrased question, not the raw search query. Two consequences you will see inside your account.

Your search terms report will fill up with irrelevant matches. Do not panic-negative your way out of it in the first two weeks. You will strip out the exact intent variants Google needs to serve you in AI Mode. Instead, watch cost per lead at the campaign level for four to six weeks before pulling any big lever.

Bidding on cost per acquisition can be brittle here because the buyer journey inside AI Mode is longer and multi-touch. If your account still relies on last-click CPA, read the journey-aware bidding playbook before you set a target. For lead generation accounts with a clean offline conversion feed, value-based bidding holds up better under noisy AI Mode traffic because it rewards the conversion value, not the raw click.

Asset quality is the lever you actually control. Since Google chooses which headline and description to combine with which landing page, thin creative gets exposed fast. Ship five headlines that each answer a different buyer question, three descriptions written in second-person plain language, and one landing page per intent variant. That is table stakes for staying competitive under the new google ai mode ads model.

How This Connects to ChatGPT Ads and the Rest of Your AI Channel Mix

Google is not the only ad market inside a generative answer. OpenAI is building its own ad system on ChatGPT, with a stated revenue target that keeps climbing (Search Engine Land, 2026). The formats and bidding rules are still moving, but the shape is familiar. A rephrased query, a generated answer, and a paid slot nearby.

Two things to plan for in the next 90 days. First, ChatGPT Ads Manager already supports upload of your existing creative library, and the May 2026 update playbook walks through what changed. If you are new to that surface, the CPA ads operator guide covers the buying model for lead generation accounts.

Second, if you are already testing highlighted answer placements in Google AI Mode, keep those separate from broad match text ads in your reporting. The highlighted answers playbook covers the intent signals that unlock those slots and how to measure them without polluting your existing search campaigns.

The one channel that still tends to reward you with citations rather than clicks is Perplexity. If your paid brand searches on Perplexity keep sending traffic to Reddit rather than your own site, the Perplexity citation workflow shows how to close that gap.

Your Next Hour of Work on Google AI Mode Ads

Pick your top 20 money keywords. Bucket them by CPC into the same three ranges the study used. If most sit under two dollars, expect a hit rate closer to 24 percent, plan accordingly, and put the saved budget into landing page and content work. If most sit above ten dollars, treat AI Mode as a live channel today and budget for the shared ad block, not a solo placement.

Pull the search terms report on your two highest-spend campaigns from the last 30 days. Flag the queries that clearly came from a rephrased question rather than a literal search string. Those are your AI Mode signals. Do not negative them yet. Tag them and watch conversions.

Audit your creative. Five headlines, three descriptions, one landing page per intent variant. If any campaign in your account is running with two headlines and one landing page, that is your first fix.

Set a 60 day review. Google AI Mode ads are still moving, and the mix that works on July 15 will not be the mix that works on September 15. Book the review now.
